The devil is the personification of evil, the enemy of God, the enemy of all mankind, described variously as the Adversary and the Accuser – even the Prosecutor.
In Genesis 3:1 we find the first reference to the serpent of old, the devil. “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.”
God curses the serpent in Genesis 3:14-15 – “So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, ‘cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’” Several things are evident in this, the serpent is a created being. He was cursed above all creatures by God, Himself. He is prophesied to be in conflict with the woman (Mary) and her offspring (Jesus) will crush its head (destroying sin and evil) and it will strike his heel (Jesus crucified).
We do not know all that evil entails, how it got here, where it came from, but we do know that we are bound to it by our choices and are broken by it and in need of salvation from it and healing through God’s own provision (Jesus).
Jesus was taken into the desert by the Holy Spirit to be tempted of the Devil who is rebuked by Jesus using the Word of God. (Luke 4:1-13)
“When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.” (Luke 4:13)
