Widow of Nain

Nasrin Stille

It was her only son who lay on the donkey cart, dead. She was a simple woman, a heartbroken woman. The mourners were in full chorus behind her. Jesus was just walking by. He said to the widow, “Do not weep.” He paused to speak to the boy, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” The boy opened his eyes, sat up, alive. Jesus walked on. The widow looked back at Jesus with praise and a prayer of thanksgiving.

What is very important about this encounter is that it mirrors a similar encounter that the prophet Elijah had at the widow’s house when he called upon God to raise the widow’s son from the dead.
